Sedation Dentistry

If you’re undergoing a dental procedure, you may be nervous about seeing your dentist. Hesitation about seeing a dentist can severely impede your dental health, and you don’t want to risk the beauty of your smile just because you are afraid of dental work.

At Wayzata Dental, our experienced dentist, Dr. Jason McDowell, offers viable solutions for persons with dental phobia. We provide our patients with high-quality sedation dentistry in two forms: oral sedation dentistry, and nitrous oxide sedation dentistry.

Oral sedation dentistry is mostly given to patients undergoing serious oral surgery, but nitrous oxide sedation, or “laughing gas,” can be given to patients undergoing even the most minor procedures.

Regardless of the treatment(s) decided upon, rest assured, all of your anxieties about dental procedures will be alleviated at our office.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is used primarily for persons who are undergoing serious dental surgery. This type of sedation simply utilizes an oral anesthetic taken prior to the procedure.

During the procedure, you will be conscious so you will be able to answer any needed questions, however, you will experience little to no pain. Afterwards, you will have virtually no memory of the surgery, and you will be able to walk away from your dental appointment with confidence that your dental health has been taken care of.

Oral sedation dentistry can be used for the following procedures:

  • Extractions to eliminate crowding
  • Extractions of wisdom teeth and/or dead teeth
  • Root canals
  • Soft tissue grafts
  • Crown lengthening
  • Gum lifts and gum restoration
  • Biopsies
  • Hard tissue grafts or bone grafts
  • Dental implant placements

So, rest assured, no matter how invasive your oral surgery may be, you will be in good hands with Wayzata Dental. For more minor procedures, we offer sedation in the form of nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.”

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a milder anesthetic that can be used for minor procedures. It is a combination of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen, so it is completely safe and effective.

This inhaled anesthetic is sure to relax you, and to relieve discomfort or minor pain
experienced during your procedure. Nitrous oxide has the following benefits:

  • Minimized anxiety about your
    dental procedure
  • An anesthetic effect so you won’t feel pain
  • It can be combined with oral sedation dentistry to further increase the anesthetic effects
  • It acts fast and wears off fast, so there is no recovery time

Nitrous oxide can be used for even the most minor of dental procedures, such as cleanings. Regardless of what your dental procedure may be, nitrous oxide will relieve your dental fear and phobia.
